1996 – My Country, ’Tis of Thee, Samuel Francis Smith

Dear Friends,

Over the last few months we have all witnessed politicians talking about the good in our country which should continue, as well as the bad which should change. During the campaign rhetoric, I heard again the words of “My Country, “Tis of Thee,” often affectionately called our “unofficial National Anthem,” which helped me to focus on our rich heritage and vast freedoms. That song, familiar to all of us, reminded me of the tremendous privileges we have as Americans which began with the pilgrim’s faith in God’s protection and hope for a better life in a new land.

Whether or not the candidate you voted for was elected, Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for the freedom and liberty we have in this country, and a time to give thanks to the Author of real freedom and liberty.

I would like to share with you the words to this song, along with a brief history of its origin.

Happy Thanksgiving,
